I have had a request from a graduate student in the Psychology Department
at this university to post the following request to the net, since her
department is not on it. Here it is:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ICON-DRIVEN COMMAND INTERFACES
I am currently carrying out a research project, from a psychological
perspective, on the development of icons to represent command functions at the
human-computer interface. In particular, I am interested in the efficacy of
representing actual operations which a command carries out (e.g. to delete),
as opposed to objects (e.g a file) which are being operated on. At present I
am investigating how different types of command names are best visually
represented in terms of comprehension and icons to be incorporated in specific
computer applications, such as word-processing or graphics. I would be very
interested, therefore, to hear from anyone who is carrying out research in this
area.
