[net.wanted] Looking for plotting algorithm

I need to find an algorithm for figuring out where to put labels and
grid lines when plotting points in a reasonable way. I am told that
there was a very good algorithm for doing this published in an
ACM publication once, but I can't find it. Can anybody give me a pointer
to such a thing? Thanks,
