I think I *did* miss the point of astrovax!tss's question. What difference does it make that Briiten's War Requiem or Pendericki's Utrenja or <fill-in-the-blank>'s <fill-in-the-blank> is not "popular"? In fact, I was at a concert ~2 years ago in Toronto of John Cage's Finnegan's Wake (based on Joyce's novel), and there was a *very* respectable turnout. (Though the show didn't sell out every night for nine months ...) For that matter, you may as well point out that Vivaldi doesn't get the air-play that Michael Jackson does. So what?
