It seems Word 4.0 has an extremely basic bug regarding displaying of fonts. Namely, it ignores the "leading" field in the font description. Leading (pronouced "ledding") is the amount of space between the lowest descender of any character in the font on one line, and the highest ascender on the next line. Typically, the leading of a font is at least 1 (pixel), in order to guarantee that characters on adjacent lines never touch. Word always uses zero value for the leading, so sometimes characters on adjacent lines do touch. Can anyone confirm this bug? Here is one way to reproduce it: in Word 4.0, select Geneva, any size and type a line of "y"'s. Hit return and on the next line type several <option-A>'s. Look closely at the two lines. There should be a one pixel space between bottommost pixels of the y's and the topmost pixels of the <option A>'s. If not, then that's the bug. Sheesh, even the lowly MacWrite handles this correctly.
