You aren't really being fair to Mike.  The reason for using MacWrite and MacPaint formats is that they are publicly available and all programs can use them.  I don't disagree that TeachText might be the real solution but if you are going to use a word processor format, MacWrite format guarantees that virtually all users will be able to read it including you with Word.  (The opposite of course would not be true, would it?)
