Ok. Can anyone tell me why SunDesk suddenly stops running as soon as I start editing the SunDesk Icons file with ResColors? I replaced both the INIT and the Icons file with fresh copies and tried editing again...then the upside-down umbrella shows up upon restart. What happened to ResColors? I got SunDesk, but ResColors never showed up. Did I miss it? And if so, can it be reposted? -- __________________________________________________________________________ |Disclaimer: I run 125 INITs. If you'd post the ResColors file and the Sundesk Icons file, both of which seem necessary to use the drun SunDesk INIT, I'd be happy to look into it for you. In the meantime, I'd defenitely not try editing the icon file while in multifinder, as SunDesk probably has it open all the time, and might cause all sorts of problems. Please post these two pieces, so that those of us who have downloaded the SunDesk INIT can try it! - Ed Rotberg -

If you add either an ICN# or an icl8 without is respective "mate", SunDesk will show the upside-down umbrella and will not function. With all of the hoopla over SunDesk and ResColors, I thought I'd give it a try (thanks Matt!). SunDesk looks pretty nice, but I really like the color icons from the IconColorizer init a little better (plus it has a much larger selection of replacement icons). The problem is that IconColorizer, like ColorFinder, stores its icons as `cicn' resources. Does anyone know of a way to transforms `cicn's into `icl8's? Also, of more general interest...what is the motivation for using the `icl8' resource instead of `cicn'? (Proverbial... inquiring minds want ot know...). Kurt Marko

If you have the ResColours addition to resedit, simply open the cicn, select the marquee tools, and drag across the entire cicn fatbits image to select it all. Then cut it to the clipboard. Now open the icl8 resource, select New from the FILE menu (te crate a new icl8 resource). When the editing window comes up, just select paste to paste it in, and viola! an icl8 that looks just like the cicn. I even whipped up a Quickeys sequnce to automate the whole process into one keystrock. Just be sure that the icl8 has THE SAME resource ID as the corrsponding ICN# in the SUnDesk Icons file. - Ed Rotberg -

(I Think?) I kept trying to do this but the selection rectangle made the Icon totally black. After your post (it was the second one that I read about this ability) I put the 32bit quickdraw init into my system folder and now it works as you say. Ed, If your not running 32 bit qd then I don't know what's going on. -- ___________________________________________________________ Matthew Mora SRI International mxmora@unix.sri.com ___________________________________________________________

Every icl8 MUST have a corresponding and identically numbered ICN# in the SunDesk Icons file. Triple-check your pairs. I posted what I *THINK* is the comprehensive SunDesk upload to comp.binaries.mac tonight. It has two sets of documentation approaching the INIT from different angles. All appologies: SunDesk is made BY hackers FOR hackers and is not really "user friendly" for adding your own color icons. This is one of the reasons I uploaded my +400k SunDesk Icons file. Expect to so upgrades (sometime!). --scott -- Scott Truesdell

All 256 colors are available without having to define them in the icon. 2 The use the black and white icon and the mask from the corresponding ICN#. 3 They "highlight" MUCH nicer than cicn's because they are using the future's highlighted CLUT. 4 Features 1 & 2 cause icl8's to be smaller and load faster than cicn's. 5 They are probably going to be the data structures supported by future versions of the Mac OS. --scott -- Scott Truesdell

Thanks for the info about using copy-paste in the ResColors template within ResEdit to convert cicn's to icl8's. I had discovered this technique, however it is somewhat painful to use if you want to convert more than a few icons. What I had in mind was some sort of MPW script that could DeRez the cicn file, massage the data in whatever way necessary into a icl8, and then Rez a new file. I've started working on this myself and I'll post if anything fruitful comes of this. Kurt Marko

This is one of the reasons I uploaded my +400k SunDesk > Icons file. Expect to so upgrades (sometime!). Well now that we're on that subject... a hacker co-worker of mine and I recently tried to add our own icons to the SunDesk icons file (bitmaps of Herman (hiya!) and greGory (kii kii). It was easy enough to add the new icons using the upgraded Resedit colour editing resources and then assign resource IDs to the icons, but we were unable to use the icons in any way. We even tried assigning the SunDesk colour icon resource numbers to our new icons and you know what happened? Absolutely nothing different. It is possible to EDIT the colour icons and those changes DO appear in the icons (for example I can put tomato stains on the trash can using the colour resource editor stuff and SunDesk displays the modified trashcan fine and dandy). So now we're trying to figure out how SunDesk equates it's colour icons with the standard desktop icons. It doesn't seem to be by resource ID number because we can change those numbers and the same icons keep coming up. Another question... is there a way to give individual folders their own icons or must that ALWAYS come out of the Finder's (or in this case SunDesk's) icons?
