[comp.sys.mac] Farallon Timbuktu Warning...

dent@unocss..unl.edu (Local Submission) (02/21/90)

This is not a flame of Farallon; I like their Timbuktu product /very/ much.
Recently (about 2 months ago) we got our update notice so we could update
to the New Improved 3.0 version of Timbuktu. "Hey, great!" we thought, so
we sent it in, along with our serial numbers, and got back a new disk and
serial numbers about a month later (it was over Christmas Break after all).

The only problem is that the disk that they sent was completely blank. It
had apparently never even been formatted, and running it through SUM's
recovery methods did nothing. So we told them about the problem, and they
sent out another disk, which we just got about a week ago. I just tried
to look at the new version (I've been drooling on the documentation for
2 months now :-), and when I stuck in the disk, discovered that Farallon
had sent "Timbuktu Remote v1.01f4", and not "Timbuktu v3.0".

That wouldn't be so bad really, but that's not what we ordered, and we don't
have the equipment to run it on. :-)

Anyway, I am actually highly amused by the troubles Farallon is apparently
going through to get the right disk out here, but thought I would point
it out to the net because:

The disks all look exactly the same from the outside!!!

The old version of Timbuktu (2.something) that I'm running now, the completely
blank (supposedly Timbuktu v3.0) disk that they sent, and the Timbuktu Remote
v1.01f4 (what a wierd version number!) /all/ say just "Farallon Timbuktu" on
the disk itself.

So my guess is that Farallon had a pretty severe mishap with a disk-labeling
machine! :-) But if you happen to be a dealer (or a campus rep, or whatever),
you might want to be aware that this type of thing has happened.
