Sorry if this point has been covered, but... I am responsible for maintaining a MacIntosh that's used by a lab full of biologists. Although I do programming, it's Unix oriented, and I know essentially nothing about the inner workings of the Mac. Here's the problem: We have a (yech) LaserWriter IISC that uses bitmapped fonts. For this reason, the system file is large--about 1.4 Mb when all the fonts are loaded. We used to have an SE with 1 Mb of memory, and the machine knew enough to load only about 300 Mb of the system file; presumably when it printed it swapped the necessary fonts in. This machine was stolen and we replaced it with an SE with 2 Mb memory, in part so we could run Multifinder. Well, what happens is that the machine always loads the whole 1.4 Mb system file, so the amount of memory available to us has not increased. By the way, we use system 6.0.4. So: is there a way to tell the machine to keep most of the system file swapped onto disk, as was the case when we had half as much memory? If you post your answer, please email me a copy also as my ability to read this newsgroup is limited. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
