[comp.sys.mac] Stupid question: How do I...?

bobg@xroads.UUCP (Bob George) (02/23/90)

Hi all,

I'm an experienced IBMer who is trying desperately to assist my dad in using
his Mac Plus (512K). While we're able to get most things going, there are
some very basic questions that I'm unable to answer. I would appreciate it
if some of you Mac wizards out there would email me answers to a few basic
questions. If there's sufficient interest, I'll be happy to summarize to the
net.

1) What is the latest OS version available for this machine? His requirements
are very basic, but I imagine newer software has certain minimum
requirements.

2) What's a good free/cheap telecomm program to use?

3) What is required to convert the usenet postings in c.b.mac to usable
programs? (This might have appeared in c.b.mac, but if so I missed it)

4) What's a good book to recommend to explain things at a VERY basic level.
He's just getting the hang of bits & bytes. While the Mac itself is very easy
to use, many of the books seem oriented towards either using MacPaint & Word,
or towards wannabe wizards. I just need a good solid description of how to
use the machine & OS - not applications. Examples would be initializing
disks, copying disks vs just files, and similar topics. (Yes, these ARE in
the books, but he's still stumbling!)

5) Lastly, if anybody is successfully using a Mac in conjunction with a Casio
BOSS, he'd REALLY like to know! Backing up the BOSS is what's driven him to
get back to the Mac. Any tips or tricks to share?

Thanks in advance. I'm not a regular reader of this group, but I'll be sure
to check it out more often.

Bob
