I need a program to un-binhex a MacPaint file transferred to a VAXstation running VMS 5.0-1. It is a "snapshot" of the Mac desktop, transferred to a mainframe VAX via Kermit and then over our local ethernet to the VAXstation via FTP. Image is then run through a filter program and into Interleaf technical publishing software, but it is getting screwed up in the transmission process. I was told that when transferring Mac binaries I should covert them tohex first (BINHEX it in Mac parlance), but I need to be able to convert it back once it gets to the VAXstation. Tx if you can help out! Lee Watkins

Speaking of un-binhexing, is there an un-binhexer available in unix?

There is a program called mcvert available from sumex-aim.stanford.edu in the /info-mac/unix directory. It converts a binhex file to a MacBinary file, which can then be downloaded using a binary protocol. There are also two other programs taht will allow you to UnStuff MacBinary files. Get UnSit and Macbin from the same directory. (Note: The version of UnSit that at sumex currently produces macput/macget format files [.rsrc, .data .info] which must be reassmebled into MacBinary format with Macbin. There is a new version of UnSit which can output MacBinary directly that will be available on sumex soon.)
