[comp.sys.mac] Conner Drives

dms@whiskey.USWest.COM (03/04/90)

As promised, below lists the responses in regards to my rfi on
Conner drives. Any more input from the folks on the net (is)
will be appreciated. I'm still looking for the right drive using
this mechanism.

Thank you - Don

Regarding your impending Hard Drive Purchase. Give
I.C.S. a call. They have excellent prices on external
SCSI drives. They are in Valencia CA, (805)257-6900
They have 20,40,80,150,340 Megabyte drives.
Good Luck.

1. Has anyone had positive experiences with these devices when
used with the MAC SE, SE/30 or MAC +?

We install 'em all the time; it's necessary on old Mac Pluses to cut pin
40 of the cable. Otherwise, they're swell.

2. Has anyone used a Conner device which was sold by ClubMac or
other mailorder company? I'm looking for specific information on
the 105mg. Drives but will look at anything from 60-105mg.

Internal 100Mbyte: $725. External: $825. Fully tested, warranted,
etc.; we use a nice case with a built-in handle.

Mainly, we do local stuff, but we'll sell to knowledgeable users.
Unfortunately, we'd have to sell you SilverLining if you don't have your
own pet formatting software; the Mac software just doesn't recognize
this drive otherwise! That's $150 (bummer, I know); we'll discount it
to $100 if you buy it with a drive. Hacking the Apple driver is another
possibility, but I'm not very willing to provide tech support on someone
else's (modified) software!

I'm looking at the external drives specifically and would like
comment on quality, drive construction, etc.

Well, we wouldn't sell 'em if we didn't believe they worked; since we
are primarily a data-recovery company (keep us handy!), we only sell
what we think will work.

I just bought one for my Mac +

I got the 105Meg External from ClubMac.

It's fine. There's nothing exciting about it, but there doesn't seem to be
anything wrong with it either. It uses 50pin SCSI connectors, came with
a 25pin to 50pin connector for the Mac, and uses dip switches to set the
SCSI id. Came with a piece of formatting software. Has a fan, so it makes
some noise, but no more or less than some other drives I've used.
The size is appropriate for sitting under the Mac + or SE. Has a power light
and an "in-use" light.
I've only had mine about 3 weeks, so I can't really speak to the reliability...
