Chapter 14 of Inside AppleTalk (in hardcover it's on page 12 of the chapter) includes a reference to a "User Authentication Dialog," quotes as follows: "Just after the workstation opens a PAP connection to the [spooler], the devices engage in...the user authentication dialog...The spooler/server must be able to carry on this dialog." "The first standard authentication method requires the spooler to receive a login string...The second requires that the spooler receive a user name string and a password, which it compares with a user authentication database..." You get the idea. What I would like to know is, has anyone (including Apple) ever implemented this feature? I have never heard of a print spooler which requires password access. This ability would greatly simplify our auditing and billing of student printouts (which are normally 5 cents/page) and no-charge printouts for specified class work. Our network consists of approximately 35 Appletalk zones using Farallon PhoneNet Stars, connected by an EtherNet backbone. We are currently running AppleShare 2.01, and the AppleShare Print Spooler; we are also testing MacJanet. Our public-use print facility has three Laserwriter II NTs. If you know of a product which has passwording ability, or know for a fact that there is none, this information will be greatly appreciated. Please mail to the address below, as we have no newsfeed at this site. As always, thanks in advance. James Fitzwilliam Academic Computing Dept.
