Please bear with me, as I am summarizing this problem and posting to Usenet, as a favor to an office-mate. He knows how to use the applications on the Mac which are relevant to his job, but little more than that. I know NOTHING about Macs, but I at least know how to post an article :-) System: Mac-SE, 1MB RAM, 45MB Rodine hard disk. I do not know the OS version, but it was installed here in mid 1987. Recently, a phenonenom has occured whereby windows which normally display scrollable selection lists (fonts, point size, ...) appear blank on screen, yet they seem to contain accessable data. In otherwords, one can click the mouse on an area within the window, and the hidden list entry will appear in the application's option field. Also, the elevator bar accurately displays the current position within the hidden list. The problem appears to be selective, as HyperCard and a few MacXXX applications will exhibit this problem, but Quark Express seems unaffected. We have managed to reinstall the documents within the System Folder, but this does not clear up the problem. Has anyone encountered such a phenomenon, or can any Mac gurus offer further diagnostic advice? Also, a remotely related question -- the size of the System document named "System" on the hard disk was ~750KB. The original on the System Tools diskette is ~350KB. After replacing the hard disk copy with the original, we notice no obvious operational differences. Is "System" the MacOS kernel, and if so, what might have been added to the hard disk copy to more than double its size? My guess is the additional code is device drivers which access devices owned by the original user, but not transferred to this setup (the only external devices currently connected are a floppy and a Laserwriter). Please e-mail any replies. -- Dave Hammond daveh@marob.masa.com uunet!masa.com!marob!daveh
