      Well, I just asked the very same question to a GEnie sysop, and here is 
the reply:

"GEnie supports MNP protocol up to level 4 on our single 2400 baud lines such as your line in Minneapolis.  In most cases, invoking MNP will slow down 
your CPS transmission.  A transmission rate of 230 cps is the average transmission on GEnie,..." 

      Since the compression is provided at level 5, the answer to the compression question seems to be no.  As to their claim, that 
230 cps is the average rate of transmission (I take it without MNP & Ymodem-g), I and a few people I know who use GEnie have never achieved that level. 
With a reliable connect around 225-7 seems to be the top rate.
