[comp.sys.mac] Conversion IBM scanned pictures to Mac format

scallon@cod.NOSC.MIL (Matthew C. Scallon) (03/06/90)

Dear Netters,

I have been trying to convert an 8-bit grey scale picture, 512 * 512 pixels,
from an IBM to a Mac. Is there a program around that can put it into a format
that Mac can under stand: PICT, Postscript, possibly.

All help is greatly appreciated,

Well, if you can find a program on the IBM that can put the image into either
PICT, EPSF or TIFF images, the Mac will be directly able to play with it. (Of
course, if it's in EPS format, the Mac won't be able to modify it unless it's
converted back to a workable format, such as PICT or TIFF.)

The "easy" (?) way of doing it is probably to convert the image to a GIF
(Graphics Interchange Format) file, zip it to the Mac, and have the Mac's
version of GIF change it to a Mac-workable format. The only problem (?) with
this is sometimes the image gets slightly "messed up" (dropped pixels, altered
colors, etc) when moving from machine to machine. SOMETIMES, not all the time.
You should be able to find GIF converters/viewers for both IBM and Mac on any
decent Mac or IBM BBS.

PICTure This! a Mac application/da combination that can convert a number
of different graphic formats to a Mac PICT file. I seem to recall that it
can convert TIFF, GIF, PIC, PX (PaintBrush), and Targa (among others) to
PICT. I'll be glad to send you the information when I'm back in the office
on Monday if you think it might help.

Oh, yes, it is a commercial program.
