[comp.sys.mac] The best things in life are FREEWARE

tonyrich@titanic.cs.wisc.edu (Anthony Rich) (03/11/90)

When a friend buys a new Mac, it's fun to give them a disk or two of
absolutely FREE software to get them started. (Besides, after people
blow their savings on a Mac, freeware is all they can afford! :^)

I decided to try to collect all my favorite freeware programs into one place
so that making up a set of "great freeware" disks was easy to do. Below is
the list I have so far. The version numbers are the latest I know of; some
of these programs are shareware in later versions, but these versions are free.
If there are more recent versions that are still free, please let me know.

If you have a favorite freeware program you think I should add to this list,
send me the name of it. IT HAS TO BE ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY FREE -- NOT
SHAREWARE. No "beerware," "massageware," or other weird-paymentware. Tell
me where I can find a copy of the program, and if I can't get it, I'll email
you back and ask you to send me a BinHexed copy. If I get many more additions
to this list, I'll post the expanded list.

For those of you who don't already have some of these, nearly all the programs
listed below are available via ftp file transfer (use "anonymous" as your
login name & password) at sumex-aim.stanford.edu (in the "info-mac" directory).
[NOTE: If you don't have ftp access, PLEASE don't ask me to send you a
personal copy; I don't want to get swamped with a ton of requests that I
won't have time to respond to.]

GREAT MAC FREEWARE (in alphabetical order)

BinHex 4.0 Converts files to/from "hex" form for safer file transfer
Boomerang 2.0B9 Lets you quickly return to recently used files & folders
Disinfectant 1.6 Terrific virus detection/removal program
Fast Formatter 2.4 Automatic floppy formatter; great for doing 50 in a row
FinderSounds 1.0.2 Associates fun sounds with Finder events (System 6.0.4)

MacEnvy 2.0 Provides detailed info about YOUR Mac's hardware & software
Mac Kermit 98(62) Transfers files to/from nearly every computer ever made
STeVIe 3.10 Clone of the Unix "vi" text editor; handy for Unix users

Any additions? It can be ANY kind of free program (INITs, DAs, games, etc).
