[comp.sys.mac] Apple Press Release

shatara@memit.enet.dec.com (Chris Shatara) (03/13/90)

Have any of you seen or heard about the following press release?

                    -------------------------

From: fadden@cory.Berkeley.EDU (Andy McFadden)
Newsgroups: comp.sys.apple,comp.sys.apple2
Subject: Apple to drop low-end Macintosh line
Date: 12 Mar 90 01:14:55 GMT
Sender: news@pasteur.Berkeley.EDU
Organization: University of California, Berkeley

Cupertino, CA

In a surprise move today, John Sculy announced that the low-end
Macintosh systems would no longer be produced.

"They're just too dang soft," said Sculy at a news conference this
morning. "Their place in the market is slipping, primarily because they
just don't hold up over the long run."

Another factor was worms, according to top management at Apples, Inc.
One source, who asked not to be named, said, "It's too expensive these days
to guard against worms and other infestations. It can ruin a whole system,
and businesses just can't afford that."

In addition to pushing their higher-end products, Sculy said that
they would place more emphasis on their GS line.

"We don't think enough has been done for our greener, sweeter series
of Apples. They have the capabilities desirable in both business markets
and K-12 educational cafeterias."

The changeover is expected to take place at the end of this year's
harvest, Sculy said.

I saw this go by last night; it's just someone's idea of a joke (IMHO). The
Apple P.R. people at least know how to spell Sculley's name correctly.

OBVIOUSLY a joke... Notice the spelling: "Sculy" rather than Sculley
throughout the "review."

Plus ridiculous "Sculy" quotes...

Plus the OBUSRDITY OF THE WHOLE IDEA!

I heard about the report about the demise of the low end Mac. I supposed the
low cost Mac is out because of competition from the clones. Low cost Mac is
aimed at the rest of us, but when you look around, there are PC clones, ST, and
Amigas with colors. Putting color on a low cost Mac would probably erode
price and profits margins on the higher end machines. I guess Apple decided
they were better off keeping the low end and high end separate, and probably
make the Apple II crowd happy.

In doing so however, I feel that Apple has turn the Macintosh away from the rest
of us, and it will go the way of the corporations who can afford it. Macs are
probably going to be concentrated on the high end workstations, with less
emphasize on the mid end.

The question is what about Apple's vision of multimedia? The Plus and SE is
definitely out of the picture as multimedia goes with no color or stero sound
chip. Any of the Mac II series will be at the high end, who will be the low end? Is Apple IIGS supposed to be our multimedia machine?

In any case, all views above is just a guess, and not entirely accurate. I
would like to hear some views and response on this.

Huh?!? Um, I've been reading my MacLeaks and InfoWorlds, NY Times and USA
Todays and I haven't seen any announcement made by Apple, or even any
rumors stating that Apple had given up on a low-end Mac (as the word demise
implies). Could somebody please repost the original message with this stuff
in it, or send it to me?

Thanks.

The "press release" concerning the cancelling of the low-end Mac was BOGUS,
incorrect, a fallacy, and most of all a BAD joke. Those who give it any
credence at ALL are doing themselves a disservice. Scully spelled Sculy?
Moves which go 180 degrees from every single indication given to date? Language
in a press release which is barely high school quality? Most of you weren't
taken in, but those who were, please take a little bit of time to think about
things before you go flailing away blindly on the net. Please...

It was a fake message.
