I need some help in selecting a database manager. My needs in terms of the actual managing abilities of the program aren't much: the program will be keeping track of names, address, etc., and will be used to generate directories, mailing labels, and addresses for Word merge letters. There are plenty of flat-file database managers out there that will easily handle these operations. What I'm having trouble finding is a program which gives a little bit of typographical control. So far, I've looked at Panarama and Microsoft File, and you can't even change fields to bold or italics in these. FileMaker II is much better, but alas, it doesn't use fractional character widths, which means that bold and/or italic words have an unacceptably low print quality. The directories that I'll be producing have to look professional, so that's why being able to mess with the type is important. Does anyone know of a database that gives one a good deal of control over the type? I need at the very least a program which allows use of boldface and/or italics and uses fractional character widths. This is a longshot, but kerning would also be nice (some of the fields will have large print). Oh yeah, I'll need a program that will run over a TOPS network too. Any advice would certainly be appreciated. And forgive me if this has been discussed over the newsgroup before. cheers, from charles s. geiger, esq.
