I have taken the liberty of posting the press release for QuarkXPress 3.0 to the comp.newprod newsgroup (it's about 10 K in size). This is the program that I alluded to in a posting a few weeks back. We at Personal Publishing have been working with the program for a while now, and are extremely impressed. So impressed that we are going to abandon PageMaker, and use XPress 3.0 to produce our magazine. (Of course, when DesignStudio comes out with its color separation annexes, as well as its macro language, we may again be tempted to switch page layout programs. I've received a lot of mail expressing interest in XPress 3.0. I did send the press release to comp.newprod almost two weeks ago; it's never shown up there (to my knowledge). So, I'm posting it here. Flames to /dev/null. S/2 Using Macs for DTP Date: Mon, Mar 5, 1990 9:54:02 AM Subject: QuarkXPress 3.0 From: Quark, Inc. 76357,3012 To: all New QuarkXPress 3.0 Publishing Software Features Greater Productivity and Ease of Use BOSTON, MA - March 6, 1990 - Quark today announced QuarkXpress 3.0, a new version of the company's premier publishing software product. QuarkXPress 3.0 marks the addition of a broad range of new features and a more intuitive interface for easier, faster, and more productive document creation. The announcement of the new version was made during a press conference at the Seybold Seminars in Boston. QuarkXPress 3.0 is fully compatible with documents created using previous versions of QuarkXPress. "We're excited about the potential of this new version," said Tim Gill, Quark's founder and senior vice president of research and development. "We listen to our customers and QuarkXPress 3.0 is the result of the features our users requested with some others we felt would enrich the product." Ease-of-Use, Productivity, and Design Enhancements The enhancements to QuarkXPress 3.0 can be placed into three broad categories: ease of use, productivity, and design. Ease of use features are typified by new measurement and page palettes providing the user with interactive on-screen access to the functionality of QuarkXPress 3.0. Other features include a library to store and place frequently used items and a document layout palette for ease in formatting publications. Many new features were added to increase user productivity. Text and graphic items can now be grouped for simultaneous manipulation. These items can also be aligned horizontally or vertically. To assure professional quality color printing, QuarkXPress 3.0 also features sophisticated color trapping for precise color printing. Users of QuarkXPress 3.0 can now take advantage of 360 degree rotated text and graphics that can be rotated in one thousandth degree increments. The new version of QuarkXPress also adds a pasteboard feature providing a work area adjacent to the boundaries of each page. "We think the features found in QuarkXPress 3.0 will give new creative tools to the publishing community as well as providing increased productivity," said Quark's Tim Gill. "The enhanced interface will benefit the designer by providing continual interaction with the design process." Completely Redesigned Documentation Quark has completely redesigned and reorganized its documentation for the release of QuarkXPress 3.0. Ease of use has been the major objective. The QuarkXPress 3.0 documentation suite consists of three manuals. The Reference Manual is a graphic-oriented explanation of how QuarkXPress works. Organized by menu, it covers every command in the program. Using QuarkXPress takes a task-oriented approach to instructional material about the program. This manual consists of seven chapters: Document Construction, Word Processing, Pictures, Typography, Color, Page Layout, and Printing. The Tutorial Guide presents exercises that introduce each subject covered by the seven chapters in Using QuarkXPress. The exercises cover overviews of the tools, menu commands and dialog boxes related to each subject area. Disk-Based Registration As an industry-first, Quark will be introducing disk-based registration procedures allowing users to type in information necessary for warranty purposes. Once the required information on the disk is complete, the user simply returns it to Quark in a postage-paid mailer. "This is an exciting new development we are proud to introduce," said Fred Ebrahimi, president of Quark. "It provides a more convenient registration method both for us and for our customers." Once the disk is received at Quark, it is downloaded to a data base where it can be easily retrieved by the company's Technical Support Department. Availability and Pricing QuarkXPress 3.0 will be available at authorized dealers and retailers. The new version is expected to ship the end of April. Suggested retail price remains the same as the previous version at $795. Those who purchase a previous version of QuarkXPress after March 1 are entitled to a free upgrade. QuarkXPress customers who are currently under warranty can receive the 3.0 upgrade for a $30 shipping and handling charge. Anyone owning a previous version of QuarkXPress who is not under warranty can receive the upgrade for $150. All QuarkXPress customers will be contacted concerning the upgrade. The new version updates will be delivered via overnight shipping.
