[comp.sys.mac] Dead Mac Plus

krs@pbhyg.PacBell.COM (Kenn Sato) (02/14/89)

I've got a MacPlus that is dead. On power up it doesn't even beep and
never goes to the 'sad face mac'. I know this is a bad sign, but is there
anything I can try before taking it in for the customary $300 board swap?
I've disconnected everything from it and I can hear the internal drive
turning after the power goes on. If I open the sucker up I could try some
wiggle and jiggle and reslots, but I'd rather not if there's something
external I could try. This is the first time I've seen a totally blank
screen failure and no beep. Any help is appreciated ... thanks in advance.

I have just been informed by one of the local Authorized Apple Service
Centers that the logic board on my Mac Plus is completely toasted. They
said it was in such bad shape that they couldn't get any useful information
on exactly what failed. This failure occured only a couple of weeks after
I had my memory upgraded to 2.5 Meg.

The service people say a new logic board is going to run me $375 + labor.
(My SIMMS survived, by the way.) I could get a *new* Mac Plus under an
educational discount for $950, so I don't think putting a new logic board
into my old (2 years ain't old!) machine is very smart economically.

What I am looking for from the net is advice. I have little money, so
a real upgrade to something like an SE/30 is out of the question.
Are there accelerators available for the Plus that replace the entire
logic board? Should I just junk it and start saving my money for
an SE/30?
