[comp.sys.mac] SunDesk causes Mac IIci to crash on shutdown

seiler@dftnic.gsfc.nasa.gov (Ed Seiler) (03/09/90)

When I try to use SunDesk on a IIci with a RasterOps 264 board, everything
is okay until I try to shutdown or restart. Then either the shutdown sequence
fails, or a system error occurs. Is anyone able to use it with the IIci? Does
anyone have an e-mail address for Frederic Miserey?

I have one confirmation that SunDesk _will_ run a a Mac IIci. That leaves the
RasterOps 264 board as the suspect. Has anyone had trouble or success with this
combination?

Maybe you need to sit on it a little longer. The incubation time can be pretty
long. :)

Sorry, I couldn't resist!

I really should have checked this out more thoroughly before posting. The
problem was I used Fresh Start to load the init. Fresh Start lets you keep
inits in a folder called "Startup Documents", which is itself in the system
folder. The problem is that, once loaded, SunDesk must be in the system folder
at restart or shutdown time, otherwise there will be a crash. This is true
whether or not you use Fresh Start, and is not limited to just the IIci. To see
this for yourself, just try moving SunDesk into another folder and restart.
Certainly a bug, and a strange one at that (why should it matter where it is at
shutdown time?).

SunDesk must be in the System Folder at ShutDown because at Shutdown,
it checks to make sure that the "sysz" resource has enough memory
allocated to load the icons on next boot. If not, SunDesk changes its
sysz to the amount needed to run before shutting down.

Why would one need to change the amount of memory required? If one
adds more icl8's and ICN#'s to the SunDesk Icons file, the system will
require more memory to load them at next boot.

Why the File has to be explicitly in the System Folder may be a good
question. Obviously, the path to the file is hardcoded into the INIT.
There may be a more flexible way to point to the file.
