It has taken a long time to happen, but the disk images for System Software 6.0.5 are now available on Apple.com for anonymous FTP. These files are in a special sw.license directory. You may FTP files from this directory, but you may NOT legally redistribute these files electronically. By downloading these files, you are also bound to the terms and conditions in the End User License Agreement found in the same directory. In addition, each of the files has this agreement prepended to its BinHex form. You need to read and remove these headers before decoding the file. PLEASE WAIT UNTIL NON-PRIMETIME HOURS TO DOWNLOAD THESE FILES. Each image is over 800K in size, and this much traffic during peak hours must be avoided. The BinHex files produce StuffIt files of the disk images. When you UnStuff these files, you will get DiskCopy documents. DiskCopy is an application from Apple for producing exact disk images and for creating floppy disks from these images. You also need to download DiskCopy for these images to be of any use to you. WARNING: DiskCopy is currently incompatible with SUM II and SAM from Symantec. If you get errors or problems with DiskCopy, check to see if these are the problem. We are currently working with our Software License department to allow further redistribution of these files and to allow us to post other licensed software. Until that time, please don't ask why other things are not posted and do not further redistribute these files. To get System Software 6.0.5... anonymous ftp to Apple.com (130.43.2.2) with password guest. Look in ~ftp/pub/dts/sw.license get the Read Me file and the End User License Agreement. Once you have read these, get DiskCopy and the disk images. All disk images are prefixed by 605i. If you don't know if you want to upgrade to 6.0.5, then you may want to read the DRAFT change history or user-level technical information on 6.0.5 documents which are also available in this directory. After getting the files... Read and remove the license prepended to each file Decode the files with BinHex then StuffIt Run DiskCopy to produce original floppy disks Boot your machine with the Systems Tools disk and run the Installer... Let me be the first to start with some questions: I have a Mac SE which was previously running the combination System 6.0.1 / Finder 6.1b7 - this worked very well, but I thought it might be time to see what new fixes and such Apple had in store with this revision. One ANNOYING thing I see is that the resident-program-list has been moved back to the bottom of the DA list. I find this to be much less convenient than the placement in 6.1b7. If you choose to use it, you can reinstall it and the DA Handler from your original SADE/MPW package and everything will be back to the way it was before, but with the benefits of 6.0.5 fixes. Might I make a plea to shorten the file names on the Apple file server so they conform to Macintosh file name length limitations? At least the 6.0.5 software! Tsk tsk. And while I'm on my soap box, how about (a) using a restartable ftp (b) providing macbinary as well as hqx files for those of us with binary ftp and slow Internet connections. -- Michael Newbery<newbery@rata.vuw.ac.nz> (...!uunet!vuwcomp!newbery if you must) "There were no survivors, sir. Has anybody gotten Diskcopy to work? I've ftp_ed it twice now and w/o any INITs, Mac II, System 6.0.4, MF 6.1b9, it either always hangs the Mac or bombs it (ID=10, I think it was). I tried running it both from the startup hard disk and a floppy. It did a little better when run from a floppy, but would bomb when I tried to load the image... Did I miss something? Any help would be appreciated. Ray rterry%hpda@hplabs.hp.com

Does Diskcopy work with Desktop mgr??? Perhaps that is why it didn't work for me. (It is at home and I'm at work right now.) If anyone using Desktop Mgr got it to work, please let me know. Thanks. Ray

Sorry for all the msgs here... I've heard from several folks that tell me it worked fine for them, but also several others that are also having trouble. After reinstalling system 6.0.4 on my system (just in case), after directly launching Diskcopy it tells me that the Finder is damaged or busy... Tells me the same thing when I boot from the 6.0.4 disk from Apple. So I guess I'll just wait until my 6.0.5 disks arrive in the mail. Thanks to all those that replied. Ray

DiskCopy does seem to be a tad sensitive to things. I tried running it on my Portable and kept getting an Error -39. I eventually copied the image onto a floppy disk and read the image into DiskCopy from there. Everything worked fine. It's a very slick program, when it works. I also shut off all my INITs, just to be sure. Never bombed. By the by, this is a Portable with 2MB of memory, 40MB disk. -David -David C. The utility DiskCopy (Apple 3.5" Disk Duplicator, v4.1) that is used to convert the System 6.0.5 disk images available via anonymous ftp from apple.com has a very definite bug/incompatibility. DiskCopy cannot be launched from a hard disk that has been partitioned with Silverlining (v5.17 in my case). When DiskCopy is launched from a Silverling partitioned disk it bombs (ID=10, hangs, and/or tells you that the Finder is damaged or missing). Workaround = move DiskCopy to a non-Silverling partitioned disk and launch from there. All works fine then. Thanks to the others also having problems w/DiskCopy that helped me to finally isolate this bug. After I installed 6.0.5 on top of an existing 6.0.4 system file, the Mac crashed solid (ID=12) immediately after booting. I worked around this by moving the new (crashing) System file to another directory and installing 6.0.5 on a "fresh" system. This seems to work ok. Oh, yes, when I tried copying the huge collection of screen fonts (souvenier of MacInTax), Font/DA mover died with error 4,-1. Copying fonts one-by-one worked. This is by way of warning: don't forget to backup your system before upgrading. Martin Minow minow@thundr.enet.dec.com
