[comp.sys.mac] internet email on a mac

I'd like to hear from people who have experience with
mac email software that can hook up to a unix host
and transfer internet mail back and forth. I understand
there are or will shortly be software that works with
Quickmail, Microsoft Mail, etc. to talk uucp.

I don't mind having to install software on unix just
for this purpose (i.e. not use uucp). I'd ideally like
my Mac to be able to take calls in the background to
receive mail from unix or other macs or email services
such as MCI mail, etc.

I fired up uupc and quickly fired it down again.
I've come to expect mac programs to let it all hang out
so one can figure out how to do things without a lot of
studying, and I found uupc totally opaque.
