#R:tektroni:-168500:inmet:6600064:000:1685 inmet!andrew Jan 9 13:31:00 1984 It was CARL who made the solo album circa 1980 and who quit temporarily because of lack of new material! He was not present at their 20th Anniv. Special (July 4, 1981) and was sorely missed; they were embarassingly ragged onstage. Brian was there, but made it quite obvious that he would have preferred to be just about anywhere else - the others have this nasty habit of dragging him onstage every time they need publicity, putting him through his paces like a trained seal, and advertising "Brian's Back!" EVERY Beach Boy has left at one time or another, by the way. Dennis made a solo album (Pacific Ocean Blue) several years ago; Mike recorded with Celebration ("Almost Summer") around 1978; Al left to finish dental school way back around '63; Brian has, of course, been in and out of the group sporadically since '65. Neither Brian nor Al have recorded solo albums. On their first release, "Surfin" (Candix 301), Brian did in fact play drums - brushes on a single snare drum (often rumored to be a trash can lid). Carl played guitar and Al stand-up bass; Dennis was not a member of the group at that time, although it had been his idea to write the song. Mrs. Wilson persuaded the others to let him join the group after the record had been released. Recent news stories have credited Dennis with choosing the name Beach Boys. It was actually someone at Candix Records who came up with the name; they originally called themselves The Pendletones (after the Pendleton shirts favored by surfers). Legend has it that they didn't find out about their new name until they heard "Surfin'" on the radio! Andrew W. Rogers, Intermetrics ...{harpo|ima|esquire}!inmet!andrew
