[comp.sys.mac] Does Disinfectant 2.0 exist?

rc3h+@andrew.cmu.edu (Ross Ward Comer) (03/28/90)

I just saw an advertisement (or announcement) for Disinfectant 2.0 in
the America Online catalog which just arrived. Is this for real? (I
rather doubt it, but I was just wondering...)

John Norstad is currently working here at Northwestern on
Disinfectant version 2, but the program is not finished and therefore not
available. The most recent version of Disinfectant released to the
public is version 1.6

John did a presentation on viruses for our users' group (The
NorthWest of Us) at the beginning of the month which concluded with
a preview of the development version of Disinfectant 2.0. All I can
say is WOW!!

He is turning disinfectant into a complete virus package. It will
include a small INIT to prevent infection. And Disinfectant itself
is being totally revamped. The documentation (which is pretty
extensive in 1.x) will be expanded and he's adding a print engine to
make sure it prints correctly. Online help is great, just hit
command-? and click on the object you want help with. If you ask
for help on an error message, it will take you directly to the
explanation in the docs.

He's also adding a checksumming feature. I've always given a
thumbs-down to checksumming before because there's too many legal
ways to change a file. However John has come up with a checksumming
scheme that sounds like it will work: checksums will be kept for
each executible resource, not for the whole file. He'll also be
adding a VirusDective like virus definition facility so you can
update Disinfectant yourself instead of waiting for a new release.

And the best news is... it's no longer modal!!! It will be able to
be run in the background and can even be scheduled to check for
viruses after work hours.

He's also adding a Monty Python sound!
