[comp.sys.mac] Upgrading a II to a IIfx

bobd@hpuxa.ircc.ohio-state.edu (Bob Debula) (03/28/90)

With all the talk about upgrading a IIx to a IIfx, I am curious
just what the path is for upgrading a II to a IIfx. Does the 1.44Mb
floppy upgrade have to be purchased? What about the PMMU (do I get
some sort of "credit" for the fact I have an Apple PMMU in my Mac II,
or do I just pull it & resell it before I get the logic board upgrade?).
Also, I couldn't help but notice that the $2800-something price tag
someone mentioned for the logic board at University prices doesn't
reflect a whole heck of a lot of a discount compared to the MacWeek
reported board swap price of $2999 (or whatever). Is there any cost
difference between upgrading a II to a IIfx (which I think will be *very*
popular; It wasn't worth my while to pick up a piddling 15% increase
for megabucks by going to a IIx, but the fx is another story altogether)?
I hope that this isn't going to be one of those famous Apple deals
where one must first upgrade the II to a IIx and THEN upgrade from
a IIx to a IIfx (or at least fork out the money for that path).
I think MacWeek printed just enough to create a whole host of
unanswered questions that inquiring minds with Mac II's are going
to want answered before we get too excited about upgrading.
Anyone at Apple (or with a price list) care to take a stab at this one?

I forgot one other question. As one who owns an external 106Mb
drive made by CSC (more or less reincarnated from my Fujitsu
2243A which I bought from them as a PC drive & then later
had them convert to a Mac external SCSI drive) I am concerned
with tales about various external drives not working with the IIci.
Will this also be true of the IIfx? What I will probably do is
wait until our department orders a IIfx, bring in my external
drive & give it a try, but others will probably not have the
resources to do this. Any comments?

If the rules will be the same for the IIci & the IIfx in regards
to external SCSI drives, I guess I could get a jump on things by
bringing my external drive in & testing it with a IIci. Any
comments?
