[comp.sys.mac] Naming binary downloads

rkm@PacBell.COM (Richard Mossman) (03/30/90)

I just had something happen that I had never considered before. I had just
finished saving off all the files for the StarTrek II Sound collections 1 and 2.
Then I merged the appropriate ones and removed file separations. Then (and
here comes the problem) I xbin'ed both the remaining files. And, sure enough
because my system (which still restricts the names to 14 characters) truncated
the "part 1" and "part 2" from the names, the second set of sounds munged the
first set and I was left with only one set.

Two things: I was able to recover parts 5, 6, and 7 of the first set of
sounds, could someone send me parts 1 thru 4? Thank you!

Also, could posters try to name files (that the system may construe as the
same file) with a maximum of 12 characters (the last two characters are always
at least .d, .r, and .i). Any thing you use within the first 12 characters
that will differentiate the two files will be sufficient. Names can be longer
than 12 characters as long as SOMETHING is different about the first 12.

Just a request from a (technologically) handicapped user.
