[comp.sys.mac] MacTCP and name servers

JS05STAF@MIAMIU.BITNET (Joe Simpson) (04/05/90)

We also run MacTCP and Gatorboxes with beta software 1.5b3.

Name service works very well. Either in the hosts file or in the
MacTCP controlpannel window you must specify the IP address of a
name server. I get primary name service from VM/CMS running the FAL
product and secondary name service from an Ultrix machine.

We run subnets via Proteon routers. Because the Ultrix machine is on
a different subnet than my Mac, I also specify a Gateway, namely the
IP address of my local router interface.

According to Caymon, the Gatorboxes listen to RIP...at least using 1.5b3
software. Although I haven't tested it, if you have "listen to RIP" checked
in the Gator software, and if it really does listen to RIP, and if your
routers speak RIP, perhaps at a nominal 3 minute interval, then you
shouldn't need to specify a gateway address in the MacTCP control pannel
window. You could just leave the default 0.0.0.0 in that field.
