[comp.sys.mac] VirusDetective

lbaum@bcsaic.UUCP (Larry Baum) (03/08/89)

I downloaded Virus Detective 2.1.1 yesterday and had the following
unpleasant experience:

I have a Mac Plus, 2.5 Meg memory, Hyperdrive HD, external 800K floppy
drive.

INITS and CDEVs: SUM INITs, Suitcase, SFVolInit, Moire, Application Menu,
Backdrop

I decided to remove VD from my system and use Suitcase to handle it instead. So I
first removed VD (under Multifinder).

I copied VD to the hard disk and opened it under Suitcase. After checking a few
files on the hard disk, I attempted to check a floppy and clicked on the "Drive"
button of the VD Dialog box. The system immediately froze (there was a disk in
the external floppy); i.e. the mouse did not move, etc. I rebooted.

Suitcase did not load. I installed VD into my System file and tried it again.
This time I clicked on "Drive" and waited to insert a floppy in the internal
floppy drive until the open dialog box appeared. As soon as I inserted the floppy
the system froze again. I rebooted

Still no Suitcase. Now I inserted a floppy while at the desltop and the system
froze. I rebooted using a virgin System 6.0.2 startup disk and reinstalled the
system into my hard disk and rebooted.

Suitcase still did not come up. But the freezing problem was gone. I reinstalled
Suitcase and reopened the DAs and Fonts I wanted.

At this point my floppy drives were working normally. I decided to test it one
more time, so I used VD again and clicked on "Drive". Bingo! It froze again.

[If you study the above sequence, you will see that VD was NOT being handled by
Suitcase this time, i.e. it was still in my system]

I rebooted the virgin 6.0.2 system and reinstalled and things are back to normal,
as far as I can tell. Of course, the system may freeze again, but I was not
having any such problems when I finished last night. Until this behavior repeats
itself, I will not use VD. This is too bad, since I consider it quite useful.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

Comments?

I would be interested to know if this problem reoccurs not
under Multifinder. If it does not, then this is a possible
way around the problem if VD is critical to your usage. I
don't know if this will help. You may set up a boot disk, and
run VD off the boot disk not under multifinder if the problem
is specific to MF.

Just a thought.

[ followed by a list of the subsequent problems...]

I assume Virus Detective is a DA? The Multifinder section in the OS
manual, as well as the Font/DA Mover section in the utilities manual
both *suggest* that you avoid using Font/DA Mover while Multifinder
is active. I managed to mung up my System file by installing a DA
with Multifinder active (I read the manual and tried it anyway!)

Just for grins (after saving off your current System), try installing and
uninstalling the DA under Finder instead of Multifinder. May work.
May not :-)

Never remove any DA from the System under Multifinder. It seems very
easy to trash the System file this way, and this sounds like what
happened to you.

It's always safest to reboot under UniFinder first. I run Virus
Detective from a Suitcase file with no problems, so it *is* compatible
with Suitcase.

Here's a paragraph from the well-written manual on Suitcase explaining
how to move DAs out of the System file and into a Suitcase file:

If Multifinder is on, choose Set Startup from the destop's Special
menu, press the "Finder" radio button, click OK, and restart the
Macintosh. Open Font/DA Mover and click the Desk Accessory radio
button. [ then copy the files out, click Remove and quit. ] [ p. 23]

Hope this helps.

I know how to startup under the finder. I prefer to just hold down the command
key, so that I don't have to reset the startup default.

The warning that appears when you remove a DA under Multifinder does NOT suggest
anything drastic.

Anyway, that does not explain why the problem recurred after I re-installed the
System.

I never said that it is incompatible with Suitcase. I said that after things got
fouled up, Suitcase would not load.

sgordon@hpindwa.HP.COM (Shaun Gordon) (04/09/90)

Could someone please mail me a parts 2 and 3 of VirusDetective DA 4.0. They
did not make it through to my machine.

BTW, I can't ftp to an archive site, otherwise I would get them that way.

Thanks in advance,
