From Infoworld April 23 1990 - no permission (Titled as the Subject says) Apple Computer Inc. acknowledged last week that the IIci has been experiencing an unexpectedly high number of hardware and software incompatabilities. "...the few (apps) that did have problems have generally been corrected by this point", says Mike Benz - Apple Product Mgr for the IIci. Nevertheless, the Iici already has gained a reputation as an ill behaved machine. ...it contains the first update of the mac rom since the original MAC II. The current version of the MAC os (6.05) tries to correct some incompatabilities, and is now shipping with every MAC. Most problems stemmed from Apple's decision to change the memory's addressing scheme in the IIci, as well as utilizing the 68030's PMMU. The IIci was the first to implement "non-contiguos memory", which makes the system more flexible when configuring memory, but also means there is no longer a one-to -one correspondence between logical and physical memory space. The memory addressing model is the same as that which will be used in system 7. Use of the PMMU now prevents applications from requesting access to ram with an invalid address. Unlike the IIci, the IIfx does not use non-contiguous memory, although it does use the PMMU to invalidate bad addresses. ------------------------------------------------------------- So there it is... I still have major bombs on my IIcx 5/80 w/ 6.0.5 !!! I have to replace the Macros file 2-4 times/week! Geesh! C'mon Appple, it's not just the IIci,,, it's 6.0.5 !!!
