Since I've had a couple of e-mail messages asking about the LaserMax 1000 laser printer I have (the 1000dpi plain paper laser printer), and several of them wanted "updates", here's what's happened so far... Upon using the printer, I noticed a few problems. Namely, (1)it didn't print Type 3 (non-Adobe) fonts, (2)it wouldn't print a bitmapped image AND an EPS image on the same page, and (3)since it doesn't use the AppleTalk port, it won't work with many laser printer programs. I got version 1.1 of their driver software with the printer and this was what I was using. UPDATE: After calling LaserMax and talking with a tech (who didn't help me much; he kept insisting that my Type 3 fonts *would* print, but they weren't), I left my number and asked for someone knowledgable to call me back. A few days later, "Jim", another tech, called me up and asked me what the problems were. I explained them to him and he noted them and said he'd send me an update to their driver software which "should fix those problems." On May 1, 1990 I received a package via UPS from LaserMax. It contained version "1.1.1" of their software. True to his word, the new software printed all of my Type 1 fonts *and* all of my Type 3 fonts (although Type 3 fonts take almost twice as long to print). However, the bitmap/EPS problem and the AppleTalk problem are still unsolved. These are minor problems, really, since I don't do much bitmap printing in my business and I don't need an awful lot of laser printer utilites. (It would be nice, however, to have a version of Adobe's Font/PostScript Downloader that works with this printer.) I wrote a letter yesterday (5/2) and it will be mailed today to LaserMax. It tells them what their software needs (the printer is great, but the software that supports it leaves a lot to be desired - it looks like nothing more than a software hack & patch of Apple's LaserWriter software) and a few other things. --------------------- Well, that's the update so far. Any questions? E-mail 'em! *************************************************************************** Steve "Lord Thanatos" Godun | thanatos@pro-graphics.cts.com *************************************************************************** ProLine: thanatos@pro-graphics UUCP: ...crash!pro-graphics!thanatos ARPA/DDN: pro-graphics!thanatos@nosc.mil Internet: thanatos@pro-graphics.cts.com
