[comp.sys.mac] upgrading from 6.0.3 to 6.0.5 on Mac SE and II

majors@milton.acs.washington.edu (Robert Majors) (05/30/90)

I recently upgraded to 6.0.5 (in order to run a program requiring it) on
a Mac SE and II. I tried to restore a file using HD backup, which worked
on the file before, but this time said it was a bad or (unknown) filename
after selecting the filename from the backed-up disc. Also, during
backup, at times the 'insert disc 2 ... (etc.)' dialog section was partially
obscured by white (i.e., not all the info was printing to screen). The
backup (a single file) process didn't work properly, either. I ran the
complete install program on 6.0.5, which I believe automatically installs
the utilities, so I think everything is 6.0.5. Any suggestions? thanks

Quoting from the 6.0.5 Final Change History file, downloaded from apple.com:

"Beginning with Macintosh System Software 6.0.5, the utility
HD Backup is no longer included on the System Software disks.
HD Backup is being discontinued because of incompatibilities
  with MultiFinder.

Apple Computer strongly encourages all users to regularly
back up all data stored on their Macintosh, and we encourage
users to contact their Authorized Apple Dealer ..."

Anyway, Installer doesn't upgrade utility programs like Font/DA Mover,
Disk First Aid, and the others. And the 6.0.5 Installer most certainly
didn't upgrade HD Backup, since it's now discontinued.

Interestingly, Apple didn't say anything about HD Backup in the readme
files on the 6.0.5 disks. You'd have to have access to the more technical
files like we do.

Regardless of whether or not you're using MultiFinder, we can probably
assume that HD Backup is not compatible with 6.0.5.

Time to call MacConnection and order someone's backup utility, eh? :-(
