We have recently bought a MaxStream tape streamer, manufactured by Archive. I am very disppointed to find that the sotware does not allow the restoration of single files, but only all the files backed up in a given session. This has many disadvantages ("Oh rats! I've just deleted that file. Never mind, I have a backup on tape I took on Tuesday - I wonder if any of the other files I backed up then have changed. I'll want the more up-to-date (disc) version." Yuk!) It also means that it had better work. If I want to check that the complete backup I've just taken was okay, I will have to restore my whole disc - what a shame if it gets covered with crap. The MaxStream just connects through SCSI. Is there any other better software around which could/should do better. Does anyone from Archive read this group and care to comment? Incidently we chose this streamer partly because according to the write-ups we saw, the software was better than most. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Alistair Edwards University of York, York, England YO1 5DD earn/bitnet: alistair@minster.york.ac.uk arpanet: alistair@minster.york.ac.uk internet: alistair%minster.york.ac.uk@nsfnet-relay.ac.uk usenet: ukc!minster!alistair
