[comp.sys.mac] Using CX software on a CI

tovah@jmegen.UUCP (Tovah Hollander) (06/06/90)

I am posting this for friends. I don't own a Mac and I don't know
much about Macs, so if I phrase the question stupidly (or if I'm in
the wrong newsgroup), please accept my apologies.

My friends recently bought a Mac IIci. Since then, they've discovered
that a lot of software for the Mac IIcx doesn't work properly on their
machine. In particular (but this is not the only example), Broderbund
(who make the Carmen San Diego games, among others) told them that the
"copy protection" on the CI made it impossible for Broderbund's
software for the CX to run. Broderbund also said that there was no
way they would port their games to the CI. Sim City also doesn't run on
their machine (this is how they got me to post this question!).

They'd like to know (a) what the incompatibility problems really are;
(b) if other companies are taking Broderbund's stand or if there is a
chance that there will be a decent amount of software that runs on the
CI; and (c) if there are any programs available that will allow CX
software to run on a CI.

I have no idea if this question is of general interest, so I'll try to
follow these newsgroups for a while. However, e-mail is preferable.
Many thanks.
