[comp.sys.mac] Are there Macintosh -> NFS solutions IN USE out there?

tom@litle.litle.COM (tom hampton) (06/05/90)

So far, I have heard a lot about products that might be suspected of
allowing a Mac to store files on a system which supports NFS. Is
anyone actually using these things?

I have heard that the Gatorbox/Gatorshare works to make NFS look like
Appleshare to a Mac. This would be perfect. Does it really work?

Is it the only game in town?

It works for me. I use my unix account as a backup device for my 40 meg
hard disk. Its slow but its better than floppies.

We are.

Well, it works okish. We had some problem configuring it (partly the
complexity of parts of it, partly our density). It does generally work, but is
a bit sluggish and for a while we did something to the gatorbox settings that
caused our three VAXes to do the big crash-ho with some kernel panic. I'm not
sure that it's strictly the GatorBox's fault, since a remote client should not
be able to make NFS die like that, but it was a problem.

They have a software upgrade (supposed to work better/faster) that we sent for
and are awaiting with blue faces (bated breath ...).

No, somebody else recently announced an NFS client for the mac, but I don't
remember who. Look through recent (last 2-4 weeks) MacWeek.

Hope this helps,
-Stefan
