[comp.sys.mac] Orphaned Response

coleman@uxe.cso.uiuc.edu (09/06/89)

Telpass to the rescue! Telpass is a companion program for NCSA Telnet which
allows you to set a user+password list for your Mac. You run Telpass, enter
the information at the prompts, and then add a line in your config.tel file
telling Telnet the full pathname of your password file. Voila! The security
hole is plugged.

Although I haven't checked, I would assume Telpass is available from
zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu viz anonymous ftp (that's the same place the sources
and executables come from).

Hope this helps,

I don't know about spreadsheet or database files, but for wordprocessor
files I would think that he can just save them as ASCII files from
Appleworks (on 3.5" disks). I don't know how or what program does it, but
I know that Mac's can read ProDos disks using the Mac 3.5" drive. Then he
should be able to just copy his file to Mac disks.

Re: Portabe flaws

I think the portable has a number of serious flaws --
(1) Lack of backlighting, for when you're going to plug the machine in
(2) YAISS (yet another incompatible slot syndrome)
(3) DRKMR (Dealer required Keyboard/Mouse Reconfiguration)
(4) Plugging in monitor *duplicates* the main screen, rather than
adding a second screen. Sheesh! Talk about self-crippling design!
(4) In general, too much support for portability in a suitcase-sized
machine, and not enough support for stationary usage (i.e. if
Apple had been clever, you could plug DRAM SIMMs into some slots,
which would only work off a wall-socket).

Re: Legislation to stop Apple from discounting computers to students.

In answer to most of your questions, what Apple fears most is that it
will have to lower its prices to everyone, in order to reach the
student population. Well, although I'm a student, I've already bought
an Apple Computer on students discounts, and since Apple will never
ever sell me another discounted computer, I say,

		"Let the legislation pass!"

Chew on that for a while.

There are many public domain programs that display GIFF files. GIFFer and Vision Lab are the two that I use. I really doubt that you will be able to
view them on an SE though!

Try "Cosmic Osmo" by the same people that did "ManHole".

Also there is a wild World War 2 Bomber game (whose title I forget)
that is so realistic (they say) that it includes headphones (whatever THAT
has to do with realism...)

There is a lot of stuff out there. You just have to look around...
