Thanks to all who responded to my cry for help. My friend ended up taking her mac to our local repare shop where they had to replace the drive. There must have been a bigger problem then we assumed. Oh well, if I run into a similar problem, I've got a bunch of suggestions to draw from! :-) Chris Kagy -- Chris Kagy "I'm really from Iowa, I just work in outer space..." dartvax.uucp -STIV dartmouth@csnet-relay.ARPA {...}!dartvax!ckagy

Just wanted to thank everyone who responded to my request for suggestions on upgrading my Mac Plus. Of course, I heard the first rumors about the new Macs almost immediately after posting my request, and, yes, I will probably hold off until they're out. Although I don't know if I can stand it that long, so I *may* buy either a full-page display *or* an accelerator in the interim, just to keep me from going crazy. In case anyone's interested, the most popular suggestions for upgrading my Plus were Radius for the display and accelerator, by a wide margin. (Although many people hadn't heard that Radius has discontinued its full-page display, and I probably shouldn't be telling, 'cause then you'll all run out and scoop up the few remaining on the shelves and *I* won't be able to get one!). The Dove Marathon accelerator was also popular, and someone who seemed *very* knowledgeable suggested an inexpensive monitor I'd never heard of--the Nutmeg by Xerox. La Cie won in the hard drive category, but not overwhelmingly. Thanks again. If I didn't respond, forgive me--I got kinda swamped. ================ Just because it's supposed to be fun doesn't mean it has to be a toy.
