[comp.sys.mac] FrameMaker 2.0/Mac - Here's the scoop!

paryavi@harris.cis.ksu.edu (Saiid Paryavi) (06/30/90)

Well, after much effort, I finally spoke to the right person at Frame Corp.
about FrameMaker 2.0 for the Mac. First, a brief description of FrameMaker:

FrameMaker is a tool for technical publishing. It gets its name from the fact
that it uses the concept of frames as the central design element of documents.
You create frames and rubberband them into position on a blank page. You
then fill them with headlines, body text, bit-mapped graphics, equations, or
drawings. FrameMaker comes with many predefined style sheets for creating
almost anything from simple memos to complex books. FrameMaker not only
provides advanced hyphenation, spelling checking, and kerning, it justifies,
paginates, and flows text around graphics as you type. Also, it does
table of contents, index, automatic section numbering and a host of other
things. In a few words, FramaMaker is THE BEST technical publishing tool
for the Macintosh.

For a small review see BYTE, July 1990, page 114.

Now for the deal:

The way it looks, a group purchase for us netters is not possible. A minimum
of 100 copies need to be purchased to get any kind of substantial discount.
However, only a handful of people have expressed interest. Also, the logistics
of purchasing 100 copies at something like $300/ea., for a total of almost
$30,000, do not look promissing!

There is some GOOD news however. FrameMaker Mac is now being distributed
through Ingrim Micro D to dealers all over country. The educational list
price is $499 and you don't have to buy more than one copy. Dealers will
get a free copy. So, if your local dealer or your campus computer store
does not carry it, tell them if they call Frame Corp. or Ingrim Micro D, they
will get a free copy as well.

The educational rep I spoke with said that $499 is the list price and that
we may be able to get it with some discount.

So, looks like I am going to get FrameMaker after all.

Here is Frame's address and tel.#:

Frame Technology Corp.
1010 Rincon Cir.
San Jose, CA 95131
(408) 433-3311

The name of the educational representative is Kelly Mattson.

Hope this info has been helpful.

According to our campus computer store, Ingrim Micro D does carry
FrameMaker Mac, but only at the "regular" retail price. In order to get
FrameMaker at the educational discount price of $499, our buyer was
referred to a distributor named SoftKat [(800) 233-8228].

Also, don't expect much of a discount on the discount. Again, according
to our campus buyer, the computer store's cost from SoftKat is very near
the "suggested educational price" of $499, so our store won't be
discounting it any further.
