Please reply to this via-email (...att!homxc!doug). My wife and I are currently MAC shopping, and would like some net.help! She's a freelance Graphic Designer, and we're both involved with Desktop Publishing. We want to get a Mac II series machine -- she's used the SE and found it's too slow to work on for such things. The FX is nice (of course!), but it doesn't seem like it's worth the extra three grand for our needs. The IICI comes with the video card (our local Apple dealer said you can't get the 8 bit card anymore -- it's the 8-24 or 8-24 GC card [And they claim the GC isn't available]), and the CX doesn't, so the difference in price between the CX and CI once you figure in the price of the card seems to make the CI worth going for. However, our local store also implies that the CI is an "orphaned" machine, and has more-or-less been superceded by the FX for those people who would buy it. This is further confused by the announcement for the Apple Expo in NYC that there's a new Apple about to be unveiled .... So my questions are: 1. Given the difference in price/features, are we better off going for a CX or CI or something else? 2. I'm worried by the MacWorld (or whatever it is) report on harmful radiation coming out of the Apple RGB monitors. We have a NEC 3D Multisync. Has anyone tried connecting this to the Apple? How does it work? What kind of cable is needed? 3. What are the student discounts available? Should we consider mail-order? 4. Any problem hooking up a 3rd party SCSI drive? It seems Apple charges about double on everything just to put the label "Apple" on it. Thank you in advance!
