We're new to the network, and I've noticed that the Mac binary files are coming over in BinHex 4.0 format. Would someone who has BinHex 4.0 be so kind as to post it to the network so that I could get it. Thanks a lot. Jan Harrington, sysop Scholastech Telecommunications p.s. Anybody have a copy of BinHex they're willing to "loan" me? :-) I've got a bunch of files here I'd just love to look at. I'm sure this has been asked in the past, but I have not seen it myself... How may I find a copy of BinHex 4.0 for converting the binaries shipped around on the net? I have uncompressed copies of Binhex 4.0, Stuffit 1.0 and Packit III on my BBS. Primarily because of the frustration I had in trying to find a copy. Try 714-952-2312. They are available from download in the new user category.

No matter which you prefer, no matter which is better (I will not make any Judgements about this), if you wish to exchange Macintosh files with the typical Macintosh user, you will have to use BinHex and Stuffit at some time and probably almost all of the time. My PREFERENCES : Stuffit 1.5.1 Binhex 5.0 -Mike Darweesh -Carnegie Mellon University -md32+@andrew.cmu.edu ps. I have used almost every modern compression program available for the Mac including MacARC

You can obtain the source code for Binhex4.0 in pascal, and other languages from stanford university via anonymous ftp at the address 10.0.0.56 by looking in the INFO-MAC directory. If that is still down, try the other machine at Stanford . You can get more details by reading the MAC-DIGEST, or whatever it is called (info.mac.digest maybe). If all else fails, I may be able to find the pascal source on one of my backups. ################################################################### # Nigel Rea # Hewlett Packard laboratories # # wnr@uk.ac.ukc.hplb # Filton Road # # wnr@uk.co.hp.hpl # Stoke Gifford # # wnr@hpl.hp.com # Bristol BS12 6QZ # # +44 272 799910 x.24197 # England # # fax 44,272,790554 # # ###################################################################

Does anyone know how I can get hold of BinHex4.0? Is it PD, or shareware, or commercial? I haven't seen it in any of the mailorder catalogs. Thanks! Jim O'Connor

I would suggest that you look on Mac BBS's, or on GEnie, CI$, Portal, etc... However, if you have the latest version (even earlier versions I believe) of StuffIt (latest is v1.5.1) it will do binary/hex conversions and the converted files read "convert with BinHex4.0" which leads me to belive that it does exactly the same thing. I recently got hold of BinHex5.0, but it is not fully compatible with 4.0 - it will convert 4.0 files, but 4.0 won't convert 5.0 files. Hope this Helps. Geoff.

BinHex 5.0 will not convert a Mac application to a form suitable for posting to a UNIX system; the converted file will have control characters imbedded in it. BinHex 4.0 will use only printable ASCII characters in the file. I'm having trouble unbinhexing some files with StuffIt. Sometimes I get a CRC error when I try to extract them. A friend suggests that there is a bug in BinHex which causes this problem, and that I need to use BinHex 4.0. Unfortunately, I don't see BinHex 4.0 in sumex (except as assembler source and I can't extract that either, let alone assemble it). Can someone send me BinHex 4.0 in a version I can extract with StuffIt? Thanks in advance. Steve Goldfield (steve@violet.berkeley.edu)

Where can I get a copy of BinHex 4.0? Is it available as public domain software? If it can be obtained thru anonymous ftp, that won't help me, as anonymous ftp isn't available to me. I have received some Mac public domain programs that are in BinHex 4.0 format. This is apparantly a well used method of transfering files through SMTP mail. I would appreciate any information on how to obtain the BinHex 4.0 program. I would also like to know if it is possible to use uuencode / uudecode to tranfer binary mac files. Thanks for any help.
