[comp.sys.mac] Cheap Laserprinters

gandhi@pender.ee.upenn.edu (Prashant Gandhi) (01/11/91)

Thanks to all who responded to my earlier message on Cheap PS printers.

I finally purchased NEC Silenwriter2 Model 90 for $1600.00.

The runner ups were Laserwriter IINT ($2250 Univ. price) and
QMS PS410 ($2000).

Apart from the price difference, NEC printer is a 6 page/min printer,
with Motorola 68000 clocking at 16.67 Mhz. Its toner is rated at
8000 pages and costs $125. It has a multi-purpose tray which can
handle letter, legal and envelops. It also does bitmap smoothing !!
The bitmap output is identical to that of the Apple laserwriter.
Most of the options (localtalk, HP emulation, etc
can be controlled thru a menu driven front LCD panel without turning off
the printer.

I have not noticed any significant delays in outputs (I don't do any
fancy graphics). So far, I am pretty satisfied. Also, the printer comes
with one year warranty with 30 day on-site repair.

I purchased the printer from a local dealer in South Jersey. However,
the cheapest mail order price that I found was $1589.00 -- not much
different from $1600. I prefer to pick up my computer equipment (at an
additional 7% sales tax expense !!).

Hope this information is helpful to people who are thinking of purchasing
a cheap laserwriter.

Prashant.
