Well yesterday I got my copy of System 7.0 from the RIT bookstore for $85 + tax ($90.??), after coming in 5 days after Apple said that they would I was very happy to get my hands on this. There is a lot less documentation then I thought there would be. About the same as my 6.0.3 release. There are 12 disks that come with the package and 7 are for installation, 1 of disk utilities, 1 compatibility checker, 2 Hypercard, and the other is networking. Installation gave me a few problems but I called the 800 number a couple of times to get some help and they were really great! Some things I liked: * Better looking Icons. * Aliases * Cool apple menu stuff * New system folder set up. wait wait wait... I think that it would be shorter if I told you what I don't like, and you can just assume I like the rest. (= Some things I don't like: * Since a lot of programs don't work well with 32 bit addressing it is a pain to have to keep on switching it on and off through the control panels-->memory switch, and then having to reboot. Thus it is just easier if you just keep it off! Which sucks because then you loose some speed, but hey. * No more Macros, when I called Apple about how to set up Fkeys and things like that, she told me that Apple stopped releasing macromaker and that it is not compatible with System 7.0. So if you are a macro man time to buy Quick Keys. Which really, I feel, is not the right thing to do. If my extended keyboard hey the F1-F12 keys, Apple should support their functionability, and not cop-out and depend on third-party vendors. * (This is a flame, and a request for help). Ok here is the deal, in (good old) System 6.0.3. I had it set up that I typed Command-T and it would empty the trash, and things like, Command-R and Command-S to restart and Shutdown respectively. Well in trying to keep with the old format, I pulled out my old resedit (1.2d --does anyone know where I can get a copy of 2.1?). Well before I just went into Finder (in the system folder) and edited the MENU resource and made the changes that I wanted. Well that is not true in System 7.0, when editing the file Finder there is no MENU resource. Ok, I thought, it must be in the System file. Well I reset that and there is a MENU but it old has about 1/3 of the options that are on the top menu bar. It is missing almost everything from the Special Window, it has the File menu bar heading but only about 2-3 options out of the 7 or 8. So if anyone out there has been picking at System 7.0.... how can I change those resources? * When creating aliases it makes them in Italic, which is really hard to read sometimes, I wish you could set the font or style of the aliases. All in all I think that it is worth it, but there are still some little annoying things that are in it, well at least to me there are! This is most cases is a definite improvement over System 6.0.? Of course it if was free it would be even better! (= Well if Apple you are reading this, a job well done, but a little help with the resources please! Oh yea one more annonying thing about System 7.0, could Apple for once give a release's documentation in hard cover, I hate those floppy spirle bound manuals. I agree that Apple should have kept supplying a Macro program of some sort, however, MacroMaker caused me so many crashes that its minor functionality was of NO overall use (actually, one could say it was of negative use).
