[comp.sys.atari.st] 40 folders questions

jmc@ptsfa.UUCP (Jerry Carlin) (11/10/86)

Now that I've got my hard disk and have gotten totally paranoid about the
40 folder limit (I'm sorry if some of this is repetitious):

1. Has anyone come up with a "reset" program that can zero out whatever
braindamaged table or whatever is causing the problem? Does a system
reset work or do you need to power off?

2. Does anyone have a desk accessory that can say "you have used up n"
   folders?

3. If you run TOS/TTP programs does this count against the 40 limit?
What about MT-CSHELL or other command line interpreter programs?

4. If you run GEM .PRG, does this count against you or only directories
that are accessed from the desktop?

5. I know that this has been discussed but what happens when you go
   >40? Does the problem happen on read of files or only on write?

6. Supra claims that the limit is closer to 90 than 40. Why do they
say that and what is the evidence?

7. Does anyone have a fix program that can repair the damage?

8. Can someone tell me EXACTLY what is going on (maybe I'll write
one of the above utilities if they don't exist now).

FLAME ON

Atari people: I know you are trying to sell Atari's to corporations but
a real fact of life is that such terrible bugs as the 40 limit means that
I would absolutely recommend against our buying any hard disk Atari's
until the bug is fixed. This may be acceptable to "hackers" but killer
bugs are not acceptable in the "real world".

FLAME OFF

I'd be happy to summarize responses.
