Subject: using vanilla Alcyon compiler for an ST?

Does anyone know the details of whether the Alcyon C compiler
for the ST differs substantially from the one for vanilla
CP/M-68K ? Ditto for the linkage editor. What i'm hoping
is that i can use libraries supplied with the ST and compile
with the Alcyon compiler that i already have.

i mainly want to use the ST as a graphics processor, and
don't want to have to get another C compiler. Note that
the question of which C compiler is better is not relevant
here, and so all such messages will be tossed out.

I'm having the same diificulty. Take for instance the less program.
After deleting the headers, I found that I had 583 lines and about
36546 characters, instead of the indicated 581 lines and 36408
characters. After uudecoding, a check with vi came up with "Incomplete
last line. 300 lines, 25984 characters. (1034 nul, 10300 non-ASCII)".
I don't think this is right.

Anyone willing to set me on the right track with this? I've missed out
on so much software, I'm getting a bit frustrated!

This is to correct some confusion about sending for the STarter Kit.

Double Sided disks are fine but they should be formatted single sided
(I am afraid that I only have a single sided drive).

Send 5 formatted disks, SASE, packing material to

If you want netland goodies instead of HACK please indicate this and specify
the goodies you want (some of the most useful goodies like ARC, UUDECODE,
KERMIT are already included - If you want MicroEmacs 3.7i please specify
(although I do not think it is worth the trouble as it has serious
limitations (two possibly more useful versions of EMACS are included)).
If you want VIX or STEDIT (I am not sure I can give STEDIT out - I will have
to check on that one) please specify. Also, from the HP notesfile, we have
an HP terminal emulator for the ST. (again, please specify).

I'm posting this for a friend who has no access to the net:

----

Why the Atari requires so much diskswapping is a mystery
to me (I do know it checks the disk-space on the target disk),
but there is one simple and effective solution:

Use a RamDisk as drive C: or D:, copy the file onto the
ramdisk, remove the destination disk, insert the target disk and
then copy the file from ramdisk to the destionation disk. Only
one swap necessary!

You'll be able to find a ramdisk in earlier netpostings!

[Since these were aparently sent from arpa and never arrived, it would
be better if someone more local to the requestor mailed them a copy,

I have in my possession a public domain chess program from Germany.
All the documentation is written in German. I know that some of our
people in netland speak German - so I'll post the documentation files,
and when someone sends me the translated files, I'll post the game.

Thanks in advance,

Review of General Electric's GEnie On-Line Service

I'm sure that many of you have seen the advertisements for GEnie in
the Atari magazines.

I decided to give it a try, and for the most part I am pleased. First
off, the prices are reasonable. It cost me $18.00 to sign up, and from
then on it's $5.00/hr non-prime-time. Non-prime-time begins at 6:00
p.m. in the user's time zone. Customers in large cities will have
local numbers to dial up. For smaller cities users may have to call
a non-local number, and I think that there is a $2.00 surcharge for
cities that are not big users of the service. Uploads are free.
After paying the initial $18.00 one is sent a binder describing the
various services offered.

There is an Atari ST user's group, and they have a bulletin board with
discussions about many topics. There is also a large library of
public domain programs, music files, paint program files, etc.
I've got lots of fun programs from these libraries. One problem is
that some people that submit programs that work only with color
systems fail to warn monochrome users of this fact.

I have used CompuServe for about 2 hours, and unless I missed something,
it seems to me that the GEnie program libraries are much bigger than
CompuServes.

You can find out a little bit about the service by dialing a toll-free
number. You can look up the details in GEnie advertisements in all of
the Atari-specific magazines.

Oh, also, if you plan to use ST-TALK to download programs from GEnie
I don't recommend it. Apparently there are some bugs in ST-TALK that
make downloading very error prone.

In summary I recommend the service to people in the large cities who
can call a local number with no surcharge. $5.00 an hour seems
reasonable - I would end up paying much more than that calling the
Atari BBS in Sunnyvale because of the long-distance charges.

Terrell

Usual disclaimer: I am not financially involved with GEnie except
that I am a subscriber to the service.

Here's a thought to help out those of us who don't use a unix system
(I use a multics system quite similar but in PL/1 instead of C), and
don't have uudecode as part of the system:
How about posting a uudecode st gem type program here. (uuencoded so
those of us without compiliers can use it) We can all take that useful
(but SLOW) basic uudecoder and decode the new, compilied uudecoder. A
simple ttp program in C would do... the uudecode source in C is easily
obtained.
I have almost successfully written a uudecode program in PL/1 so if
there are any multics users who want what I have written so far, drop me
a line.

I have been impressed with running gnuplot (see net.sources) on a host to
which I connected with Uniterm. Apart from the fact that Uniterm is left
in Tektronix mode on quitting, it looks great. I am considering putting
in the mods to make it run on an ST in native mode (I have Megamax).
However, years of experience tell me that all ideas are either bad or have
already been implemented. Question therefore: has anyone already done it?
If so, what are the necessary routines needed in term.c?
