Brian is right! In my previous posting I made a mistake in the address to be
changed.... Instead of 0DC7hex I wrote 0CD7hex; MY MISTAKE! sorry....

Regarding the ROM patch, I thought it was necessary to invert a line in order
to use an EPROM where a ROM used to be. It's been a long time since I've
checked on this, though, so I could well be wrong. Would anyone care to dis-
pell any thoughts I and others may have regarding this? Is it possible to
simply plug in, say, a 27C256 into the ST and have it work? Also, what kind
of access time is necessary? I ordered 200ns parts, but maybe 250ns parts
could be used which are cheaper?

Is there anybody reading this who has an appropriate (EP)ROM
programmer and wouldn't mind making a few copies of the speeded-
up U7?

Two related questions: What are the legal (i.e. copyright) problems,
if any, in connection to person A making such a chip for person B?
Also: is it better to wait for Atari's new ROMs (coming soon???) before
embarking on a ROM modification spree? (Who knows: they might make them
right this time --> no need for mods!)

i put in the rom patch into an intel 27256 on friday and have been
running at a NOTICABLY faster disk access speed since, its worth the
effort in my opion

I realize this is the stuff rumours are made of, but is Santa really
bringing us a ROM upgrade? Is there another set coming out at all
(perhaps early next year)?

BTW, is the ref. book from Atari on-track for coming out by Christmas
time? N(o)e(i)l?

Boy, oh boy, I can hardly wait already! Yabba dabba doos, everyone...

There is a very handy reference book available for the ST from
Glentop. The book is very terse, and certainly is meant as a quick reference
for people already familiar with the ST's hardware, OS & Gem. It serves that
purpose very well. If you are looking for a book that tells all about
Gemdos or aes/vdi etc, this is not for you.
Title: The Concise Atari ST 68000 Programmers Reference Guide
	Author: Katherine Peel
	Foreword: By JT himself!
	Publisher : Gentop
	ISBN: 1-85181-017-X

Mark Williams has supposedly written up excellent documentation on
Aes/Vdi and Line A. Their present documentation describes bios,
xbios, gemdos and of course the standard C libraries very well. If the
additional documentation is of the same quality, then it will certainly be
the one to have. Some people claim to have seen it, and have high praises
for it.

Is ATARI incorporating this new change that speeds up disk I/O in a new
version of the ROMS ?

Anyone from ATARI care to comment?

Regarding the ROM patch for faster disk I/O: David Small, designer of the Magic
Sac Macintosh emulator cartridge, recently posted a warning to CompuServe's
Atari16 Forum. He mentioned that he had examined the patch and believed it
would damage (or could possible damage) a user's disk drives and/or disks. I
don't remember all the other information except that he _strongly_ recommended
avoiding the patch. Contact him for more information.
