Wait a Minute, it is "under development"? Breakout was SHIPPED with the
first ST's! Am I to understand that a program that was shipped with the
first ST's and that is available from Atari's own BBS and GEnie and every
other decent BBS in the nation, all of suddent changed to a program
"under development"?
I worked for an Atari Dealer for a while, and it is fascinating
watching Atari change its prices of things. We were informed that the
ROM upgrade would be $30, then they added the blitter, and it would be
$50, then when all the dealers showed interest, it went up to $70,
now it is around $120. Fun. GDOS was announced as a FREE piece of
software to be distributed. Then they put a price on it. Now, they are
not even ready to release it. The New version of Basic is supposed to
be free when finished. HA! I bet Atari will put a price on that too.
Having to buy GDOS separate, reminds me of IBM which requires you
to buy MS-DOS as a add-on option.
I called Sub-Logic, Monochrome Flight Simulator ][ will be out in
January.
Did you realize how N. Harris has stopped answering user questions
here, but HOW FAST his breakout complaint flew out? Wow. If only user
support was that fast.
Where is Microsoft Write? The dealer news tell us that is was
supposed to ship Nov. 1. Atari is now running an Ad in Newsweek with
a picture of it. I think there is a law somewhere against advertising a
computer with software that does not exist. "Remember Amiga with their
ads claiming to be IBM compatible that got stopped..."
Anyone seen EZTOS? I friend got it on DELPHI, seems someone out
there is writting a replacement to GEM with GDOS or equivalent in it,
and NICE windows and REAL ICONS that is pretty compatible. But it was
a preliminary version. If that is ever finished, the last people will
use the desktop is to load EZTOS and go on. (It is 30K). But Atari might
find some competition there.
BTW, Atari's Printer port on the ST is NOT all that STANDARD. If you
are trying to hook a Okidata dot-matrix printer to an ST, talk first to
your local Atari dealer. There are cable modifications that must be made
cause Atari did not use a standard connection....some voltages are
messed up or something. Need a tech for that one.
Now that 1st Word and Logo are NOT being shipped with ST. I think
you guys at Atari should STOP saying on the BOX that they are. Already
several friends of mine have gotten their ST's with the colorfull box
claiming $200 of software inside. Yet, LOGO and 1stWord of course are
not with it. Leaving the Control Panel, Vt52, and Basic. ($200 at what?
IBM prices?)
What ever happened to Atari's IBM emulator? All of a sudden Atari
seems to have forgotten it ever existed. Wasn't it supposed to ship
by X-Mass?
BTW, don't try buying a double sided drive this X-Mass. They are NOT
available ANYWHERE. I called every distributor, and every mail order
place there is. Not until AFTER X-Mass. Smart move from Atari to SKIP
the X-Mass holidays.
Well, enough for now. Got a computer fair to get ready for, us with
ST's in a sea of clones!

1. Has anybody got C source for uudecode? I have assembly source but have
trouble making an executable file with it (anybody use A-Seka?). Does anybody
on bitnet know of a program for CMS which can do the uudecoding before you
download?
2. Is it possible to produce composite color output with an ST rigged to
produce only RGB? I have a composite RF modulator for my old VIC-20 I'd like
to use for the ST, if possible.
3. How can we access the PD Atari stuff (at score?) from Bitnet? Is there
anybody out there willing to send me a list of games/utilities that are avail-
able?

To the person who asked about how to save the cursor position:
The wrong way - if you output esc-j esc-k (save cursor immediately followed
by restore cursor), you will find that upon return d0 has cursor x
coordinate, and d1 has cursor y coordinate.
A better way:
(pointed out to me by jwahar bammi)
After line-a initialization register a0 points to the line a variables.
Assuming that a0 has that pointer,
move.w -28(a0),d0
move.w -26(a0),d1
will leave x in d0, y in d1. I wish I could find documentation on the line
a variables. Can any one help out? For example, I have noticed that
the mouse coordinates may be found at -602(a0) and -600(a0).
Are these stable?

I have a .5 MB ST with SS floppy. I wish to buy a C compiler (choices
would be megamax, lattice, and mark williams). Any recommendations?
In particular are any of the above NOT distributed on SS disks, and do
any include a debugger (MW's ads say they do)? I'm pretty sure I will have
to purchase a hard disk as well.

Most games are color-only, regardless of what they say on the box.
I only know about a few games.
Silent Service runs on mono systems (it has an irritating copy-protection
method)
Lands of Havok (really boring) runs on mono systems.
Someone on the net said that starglider ran on mono systems. I tried to
boot a dealer's copy, and got bomb characters.
Flight Simulator is reported to say color or mono on the box, but allegedly
only works on color systems.
The krabat chess game and the puzzle game that I posted only work on mono
systems. Much of the European software is like this.

some 30% faster disk access.
One of the net-users replied with a list of Eprom's that could/could not
be used in the Atari ST. Could someone *please* send me that list again,
since here in Holland we're experiencing serious difficulty in

Hi,
For the record...
1. The Magic Sac allows you to run a large percentage of Macintosh software.
I would estimate between 60 and 80 percent. When running the Cartridge,
the ST appears to respond EXACTLY like a macintosh (good and bad!). The
major differences being a larger screen area (though similar image size)
and a different disk format.
2. According to the docs, it DOES work on a 1 meg 520. I have a 1040 so I
haven't been able to verify this personally.
3. The documentation includes a method of hooking an imagewriter to your ST.
If an imagewriter is not available, a comercialy available macintosh
printer driver is said to work, called EPSET. This allows you to use a
standard epson type printer through the parallel port.
4. The Magic Sac is obviously a *very* complicated series of patches to the
macintosh operating system. As such, any program that accesses the roms
directly will crash. Also, there are various other hardware differences
between the mac and the st that can play havoc with system dependant
programs. In general if it will run on a Lisa running MacWorks, it will
run under a Magic Sac.

I don't know if this is news or not but...
At the Canadian Computer Exhibition, here in Toronto last month,
Atari was demoing (real live software to play with!) write. I tried the
program for about 10 minutes and was *very* impressed. It really seems to
compare with the best of Mac word processors, including dynamically loaded
fonts, and a solid user interface. From the looks of it, it uses GDOS.
I know there was initialy anymosity between Atari and Microsoft
because Atari decided to go with GEM instead of Windows. Maybe thats what
the rumour were about?

Ravi,
That is really wierd to say the least. I have been using the cartridge
for about 2 months now without problems. Which version of the software are you
currently using? I am using Version 2.0. I have talked to Dave Small in the
past, and the only problem involving the disk drives still at large according
to him is a duplication of write protect on drive 1 to drive 2. Maybe your
driver is flawed.
