[comp.sys.atari.st] Blackpatch and more

moore@NCSC.ARPA (Moore) (12/14/86)

And now, for something less controversial....

Reading over the most recent digest, I found a duplicate message from me (which
several people had been kind enough to already answer) regarding MACICON.PRG;
after it appeared in an earlier digest, several wrote to say that, no, MACICON
can't work in the AUTO folder, since GEM is not up yet. Thanks; it makes sense
to me.

Meanwhile, take care when ordering from Blackpatch Systems (sp???). I placed
an order by phone Nov 8 for four games; my VISA card's balance has taken a nose-
dive, but the S/W is a no-show so far. Incidentally, they charged my card the
day of the order. FL State Department of Consumer Rights (or some such, it's a
part of the machine) says BP Systems must ship w/in thirty days, or write me and
tell me why. I'll give em till Christmas.

Thanks for the warning on Blackpatch. I wanted to get pricing data on
their RGB monitors and MW C, but never could get them to answer either
their 800 number, or their Ohio(?) phone.

Apparently BP has been gaining a reputation all over. I vun an ST-only BBS
on my old IBM PC and have seen several warnings from local Minnesota ST
owners about BP taking 1 to 2 months to fill orders. In fact, one of the
people called up BP to cancel an order and get his VISA card refunded and
instead got charged double. The package did appear on his doorstep two days
later, however.

If you're looking for fast turn-around on mail orders, you might want to
try BBS Software. Their actual location is Ogden, Utah, so I didn't think
that shipping to Salt Lake City (where I am) would take too long, but I was
pleasantly surprised: I ordered Monday morning and had my software on
Tuesday morning.

BBS Software takes orders through a BBS (801-479-0738) as the name might
imply. While you are logged in, the status of their inventory is displayed
on line so you can tell if they have what you want.

The prices are about the same as BlackPatch's ad prices (usually about $1 or
$2 more).

DISCLAIMER: I have no connection to BBS software other than as a satisfied
customer.

These people are very slow and their phone-answering leaves something to
be desired. I ordered an Avatex modem from them and it took two months
to arrive. I could get somebody on the phone when I called maybe 50% of the
time [their non-800 number is in Baltimore, I'm in San Francisco].

When I ordered from them, they claimed they would ship the same day payment
was received [I used a money order]. Right.

I don't feel the $20 I saved was worth the 2 months [+ phone charges] I wasted.
