I have an ATARI SH-204 with a very big problem. I think that I exceeded the 40 folder limit since garbage suddenly appeared in the directory windows. So I wrote off some of the stuff that wasn't backed up and attempted to reformat. It just wouldn't do it (well it did a so called format that took 1 second and didn't change anything). Can anyone help? Some symptoms are: (1) After reboot Drive C: shows a copy of the contents of the auto folder of the boot disk. All programs give TOS error #35 when a double-click is performed. (2) Writing to this disk caused all titles to turn to jibberish (and it adds many new icons). (3) Using HDX under the partion edit it shows 87.2Mb in partion 1 and 40.7Mb in partition 4 with the others unused and 0 Mb unused. (4) Using the markbad option gives an alert box stating "Logical sector out of range". In all of the talk on the net about hard disks I haven't heard of this problem before. I would be very grateful for any help that I might receive. (I really want to be able to use my hard disk again!) Kevin Schneider BITNET: S071768@UMRVMA Acknowledge-To: <S071768@UMRVMA>

The early hard disks were shipped with a buggy HDX. The "canned" partitions worked fine, but the partition editor would create overlapping partitions that would eventually lead to the sort of bizarre behavior you describe. Atari announced that the bug was corrected some months ago and that the updated HDX would be shipped with the new disks and would be available through dealers. I am still waiting for my dealer to get it, as I am also waiting for the ability to boot directly from the hard disk, another feature that was announced by Atari several months ago but never to my knowledge made available to users. In the meantime, I have been using the 10-5-5 canned partition and have had no further trouble. Maybe you have the bad HDX, too, in which case I suggest you repartition and reformat your disk (if you can) using a canned partition. --Mike Fischer <fischer@yale.arpa> -------
