K538915@CZHRZU1A.BITNET.UUCP (01/27/87)
First I would like to thank everybody for the praise which I get
the whole time (don't start overdoing it :-)). A few questions crop up
reguarly about UniTerm and myself, so it is probably resonable to send
the anwsers to the whole net:
1) Why don't I anwser every letter?
Very simple: in a lot of cases (->UUCP) I just can't. I normally try to
respond twice and if I can't get the connection working then,I just give up.
There is no such thing as a Reply function for Bitnet and most gateways
don't parse paths like BlaBla1!BlaBla2!BlaBla3 properly. There normaly
aren't any problems with arpanet sites and it seems as if I've found out
how to get to Janet, but there are even some Bitnet sites which make the
node at CERN cry out.
2) How do you contact me per e-mail:
You will have to be able to send mail to Bitnet, it's probably
best to try via Arpanet.
the site is CZHRZU1A
and the account K538915
3) How to contact me per snail-mail:
Simon Poole
Bahnhofstr. 51 b
CH-5430 Wettingen
Switzerland
|__________|-------> BTW this explains why I don't have a CompuServe
account, I hardly have enough money to pay my
normal telephone bills..one call to the US
would probably make me bankrupt!
4) What do I do for a living?
I'm studying experimental physics at the University of Zuerich (NO not
the ETH, we are the institute with the neat neutrino mass experiment
(real name dropper :-)), to earn money I do a lot of things, including
giving courses in numerical methods on computers (IBM-PC yuk!).
=> I do not get paid for supporting UniTerm! I did get a small sum for the
initial version, but thats all.
5) Do I want money for UniTerm?
For legal reasons I can not make UniTerm shareware and keep on distributing
it via this computer system (for none commercial purposes only!), that means
I can't put a notice in UniTerm or on this net asking for a contribution.
Anyway I would rather not ask for a compulsary contribution..if you want
to send me money don't let me stop you, but you are under no obligation to
do so (not that I don't need the money, its just me being nice:-)).
6) Current version:
The current version is 1.6g (really the same as 1.6f just a few minor
improvements), it includes a Kermit implementation and XModem.
7) Next version:
The next version will include at least XModem CRC and large packets,
it is in testing now.
8) Documentation:
There are docs for version 1.6c in PROFF format. I may change to 1st_Word
format soon. I'm updating them now to reflect the changes in the more recent
versions. I'll try to get a copy on the bitnet server at Houston, if they
have enough disk space.
9) Keyboard mapping:
You can change the mapping of most of the keys (except the numeric keypad
the function keys and the cursor block), you can hack around in the setup
file with a disk editor if you want to, or you can use the KeyEdit program
(pls use the correct version for your copy of UniTerm) which allows you to
do this in a bit more interactive way.
10) Entering control characters in the function key strings:
This is the single most asked question and it has a very obvious anwser:
just do it!
with other words for ^A press <Control><A>, for ^B press <Control><B> etc.
The characters will be displayed with the characters in the Atari font
with the same ASCII value, that's one reason for the ASCII table at the
back of the docs!
11) Why isn't there a cursor in 132 (really 128) column mode:
The TOS built in cursor routine only supports 8 bit wide fonts..one day
I'll do this myself.
