[comp.sys.atari.st] A 40-folder relieve program

Patrick@ark.cs.vu.nl (Patrick van Kleef) (01/27/87)

Below you find the Harddisk driver program Atari Benelux
distributes with the SH-204 Harddisks. They are *positive*
(even after double-checking and reminding them of both Alan
Pratt's and Neil Harris' remarks) that it relieves the
40-folder limit problem. They claim they've written it in
close cooperation with some guy in Japan, who's supposed to
have written the original driver (don't blame me if this is
incorrect {one can't be too careful in these buggy days}).

I might add that I've worked with the SH-204 for a couple
of months, using this driver to boot, and experienced *no
problems whatsoever* even after having close to a 100
folders (Russian roulette?). The guys at Atari Benelux have
been working with it more than six months (having 87 folders
on the harddisk alone {!}), without problems. It's a good as
guarantee as any, I think.

** flame on **

therefore this posting to the net. A limit of 40 folders is
more than ridiculous on a harddisk! Atari USA should try
much and much harder to relieve this problem for existing
customers, before the sales start dropping due to
slow user-support. If necessary, release a new version
of Gem/Tos on disk. I could live with it when I first bought
my ST, I can probably live with it again, although I've
got Tos in Rom by now!

Sorry Patrick, I downloded the uuencoded AHDI.PRG you posted and checked it
against the driver which I got with the update of HDX.PRG.....its byte for
byte the same (I'm sure Atari US will love that)!. Naturally that also means
that it doesn't fix the 40 folder bug, problem, feature (pick the one you like
most) (just to be sure I checked....oh yes it's still alive and fighting).

                             Simon

PS: My best wishes for the next few days to ATARI Benelux :-)

I am the author of AHDI.PRG, and I can categorically state that it

DOES NOT FIX THE 40-FOLDER LIMIT

despite anything that Atari Benelux claims. I don't care how many
folders you've been able to have on your hard disk. And yes, I
think the 40-folder limit sucks.

I have a "fix" (that lets one choose how many folders one wants, at
the expense of some memory) that will be posted to compuserve as
soon as I'm satisfied it *works*.
